Description
Circa 1970s ring with a bezel set root beer brown cabochon with yellowish streaks. I think it is probably copal, a softer and younger tree sap than the crystallized tree sap that is prohibited on Etsy, though it could possibly be a synthetic resin. Simple geometric setting with split shoulders. Stamped 925 under the setting.
The word copal is derived from the Nahuatl language word copalli, meaning “incense”. Copal is still used by a number of indigenous peoples of Mexico and Central America as an incense, during sweat lodge ceremonies and sacred mushroom ceremonies.

Condition: Very good condition with moderate wear seen and dark patina/tarnish which could be polished away if desired. Copal has surface crazing seen on very close inspection, a few surface blemishes which are probably natural.
